Abortion Industry Leaders, Politicians Afraid to Have Debate on Life

Henry Morgentaler and Canadian politicians are afraid to debate the abortion issue, according to Campaign Life Coalition.

"It's time for a real debate on the right to life in this country," says Jim Hughes, national president of Campaign Life Coalition.

"Morgentaler is siding with Jean Chretien, Alexa McDonough and Joe Clark in condemning the Canadian Alliance for simply supporting a process which might lead to a national debate on abortion. Why are they so afraid to debate this issue?" asked Hughes.

Morgentaler inaccurately refers to a "right" to abortion. "There exists no 'right' to abortion from any judicial and legislative process," says Hughes.

According to the Supreme Court decision of 1988, which struck down Canada's old abortion law, it is up to our elected representatives in parliament to define the legal rights of the unborn.

"Everyone knows that all human beings have the right to life," says Hughes. "It's time for our politicians in parliament to live up to their responsibility and restore the legal rights of the most vulnerable human beings, the unborn children."

Since the 1988 court decision Campaign Life Coalition has been encouraging parliamentarians to take up the challenge presented by the Supreme Court of Canada to define the legal rights of the unborn.

"Some day - hopefully soon - parliament will debate this issue," says Hughes. "That is why Campaign Life Coalition encourages all pro-life voters to vote for the pro-life candidate in their riding, regardless of party affiliation. We need more pro-life MPs who will vote to protect the unborn child."
