9, 2001 Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) commends Saskatchewan Member of Parliament, Garry Breitkreuz for introducing the first pro-life motion into the House of Commons on Friday, February 3. He introduced the motion that he had presented to the last session of Parliament, urging the government to draw up legislation that would define a human being in Canadian law as beginning at conception. This would give unborn children the right to the same protection that other people possess under Canadian law, including the right to life. Karen Murawsky, Director of Public Affairs for CLC, says that, "it is time that law caught up with the truth and with what every mother knows, and every medical and scientific fact has proven; her baby, a new human child, came into existence at the very time of conception (fertilization)." Private Members' Motions and Bills are picked through a random lottery for debate in the House of Commons. If they are declared votable, they receive three hours of debate in the House of Commons. The motion is number M-228. It reads: "That, in the opinion of this House, the government should bring in legislation defining a human being' as a human fetus or embryo from the moment of conception, whether in the womb of the mother or not and whether conceived naturally or otherwise, and making any and all consequential amendments required." Canadian Alliance MP Garry Breitkreuz (Yorkton-Melville) has always demonstrated a commitment to life since first elected in 1993. Campaign Life Coalition commends this measure and looks forward to working with Mr. Breitkreuz to advance this motion.
