April 27, 2001 The U.S. Unborn Victims of Violence Bill, which passed the House of Representatives on Thursday, April 26th, is a cause for celebration. "Finally a piece of National legislation which recognizes the humanity of the child before birth," said Mary Ellen Douglas, National Organizer of Campaign Life Coalition. During the debate, pro-abortion Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., noted the significance of the legislation saying; "This would be the first time in the federal legal system that we would begin to recognize a fertilized egg, a zygote, an embryo or a fetus. That's what the bill is trying to do No sneaking around today, fellas. We're going to have to put it all on the table." Karen Murawsky, Director of CLC Ottawa Lobby office said, "It is certainly about time that justice prevails and legislators recognize what truly honest people have known all along - the child in the mother's womb is a HUMAN BEING and as such is worthy of protection." "We hope that our Canadian legislators will follow suit," she continued. Campaign Life Coalition calls on the federal government to initiate legislation to protect the Child in the womb from all harm.
