Life Issues: F
• Supports abortion-on-demand, voted for embryonic stem cell research and opposes the Unborn Victims of Crime Act . Dion has not stated his position on euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide but the Liberal Party officially supports assisted-suicide.

• Voted for same-sex ‘marriage’. Vows to introduce a national daycare scheme. The Liberal Party supports legalization of marijuana and expansion of so-called safe (drug) injection sites. The Liberal Party supports decriminalization of prostitution.

Stephen Harper - Conservative Party
Life Issues: D
• Has said that a Conservative government would not re-open the abortion issue and therefore he is willing to let the status quo of abortion-on-demand continue. Has said that he doesn’t sit on either ‘extreme’ of the abortion issue. His government twice thwarted private members’ bills to recognize the unborn victims of violent crime. In the French language leaders’ debate in 2006 and in a 2002 interview with The Interim , he said he opposes euthanasia.
Family Issues: B+
• Opposed the creation of a national daycare scheme and supported parental choice in childcare arrangements; voted against same-sex ‘marriage’ and his government introduced legislation to re-visit the issue. The Conservative government opposes safe injection sites and the party opposes decriminalization of marijuana. The Party supports the status quo on prostitution.
Democracy Issues: C-
• Despite speaking out against them as leader of the National Citizens’ Coalition in the 1990s, his government has maintained the election gag law and the justice department has defended the Canadian Human Rights Commission. The Conservative government disbanded the Court Challenges Program and reduced funding for special interest groups.

Elizabeth May - Green Party
Life Issues: F
• In a 2007 by-election, she said abortion is not a “black-and-white” issue, called it a serious moral dilemma and said that she is personally against abortion and would never have one herself. During the present campaign, she issued a release saying she supports abortion-on-demand, but that it “should be safe, legal and rare.” Yet, she also said access to abortion should be increased in rural areas.

• The Green Party platform vows to “expand the rights for gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transsexual Canadians” without enumerating which rights that might include.
Democratic Issues: D
• Supports proportional representation and funding for special interest groups. Has not commented on human rights commissions.
