Don't Take Away Freedom of Expression and Peaceful Assembly

On May 29th, MPP Yasir Naqvi, the Ontario Liberal Government’s Attorney General, announced that he will table a bill in the fall to transform public sidewalks into “No Free Speech Zones”, outside every abortion facility in the province.

These proposed bubble zones within which pro-life speech and expression is banned, would prevent pro-lifers from demonstrating or counselling within a certain radius of an abortion facility where children are killed by abortion. That will include hospitals where abortions are committed. These bubble zones are expected to resemble British Columbia’s and Newfoundland and Labrador’s, which have bubble zone laws “not exceeding 50 metres” around abortion facilities.

Women Are Helped By Sidewalk Counsellors—Not Hindered
Dear [Recipient's name will be automatically inserted], MPP:

In case you are not yet aware, MPP Yasir Naqvi, the Attorney General for Ontario, has said that the Ontario Liberals, under Kathleen Wynne, will be introducing a bill in the autumn that will ban pro-life expression in the vicinity of abortion facilities and perhaps also, hospitals that commit abortions too.

Sidewalk counsellors are being falsely painted by the media, and some politicians, as a danger to the safety of pregnant women seeking abortions. While certainly not every woman takes sidewalk counsellors up on their offer to provide information about non-abortion alternatives, there are many who do. They get connected to crisis pregnancy centres, maternity homes, adoption agencies, or post-abortive counselling. And many of these woman are immensely grateful—their child’s life ends up saved, they are spared the emotional consequences of abortion, or they receive the appropriate services to deal with these consequences.

Sidewalk counsellors provide women with relevant and important options and information that they may not otherwise get. If a woman is determined to get an abortion, she may get annoyed or upset at a sidewalk counsellor who offers to speak with her, but this should not be considered a legitimate reason to deny pro-life people the right to assemble peacefully or to exercise their right to free expression on the taxpayer-owned sidewalk counsellors. Besides the civil rights issue at stake, pro-lifers often help women who have been coerced to abort, and aren't their of their own free will.

As a constituent of [Recipient's riding name will be automatically inserted], I would like you, [Recipient's first name will be automatically inserted], as my local M.P.P, to preserve the constitutional right of pro-lifers to witness to express their views on the public sidewalk, and to continue doing their their lifesaving work. Please combat this upcoming bill.
