Parents & students strike

From May 4th - 11th, potentially thousands of Ontario parents from diverse walks of life will keep their children home from school as a way to protest Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne's controversial sex-education curriculum. This strike was organized by a group of parents through a Facebook event page. The event has  been liked by approximately 6,000 people and we know that parents will be withdrawing their children from numerous Public and Catholic school boards including the Peel District School Board, the York Region District School Board, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board and others.

They are promoting the strike with flyers and have developed a template letter in English and French that can be signed by parents and given to the Principal and Teacher.

This sort of protest is not for everyone. Some parents may not be able to keep their child home for work, financial or other reasons. Others may be nervous about singling their child out if they are the only one in the class participating in the strike, or have a fear about children in older grades falling behind academically.

However, for those parents who want to respectfully make a strong impression on their child's teacher,  principal and school trustee, this may be an effective avenue, and a way to show solidarity with the more than 160,000 parents across Ontario who have signed petitions in opposition to the sex-ed curriculum.  Another way to participate in the strike that is not so burdensome, is to do it for just one day. May 4th would be the best option.
