25 years of unrestricted abortion no cause for celebration

Toronto, Jan. 21, 2013 – Almost 25 years ago, on January 28th, 1988, the Supreme Court of Canada, in the Morgentaler decision, struck down the existing abortion law, making Canada the only western country with unrestricted abortion-on-demand, fully funded by taxpayers. Since then, at least 2.5 million children have been killed at the hands of abortionists like Henry Morgentaler.

"Today is not a celebration, but rather a day of shame for Canada," said Jim Hughes, President of Campaign Life Coalition. "As a global leader in human rights, it’s a disgrace that for the last 25 years, this country’s govern ment has neglected to put an end to the greatest human rights violation of our time, the killing of children before birth."

"It is very sad that some have announced their intention to celebrate the killing of innocent human beings as an achievement," said Mary Ellen Douglas, National Organizer of Campaign Life Coalition. "In a recent vote in Parliament some politicians have refused to even examine modern scientific evidence which supports the reality of the child in the womb."

The Supreme Court did not rule that a woman has a constitutional "right" to abortion. The decision leaves it to Parliament to enact a new abortion law that could protect human life from the time of conception onwards.
