Campaign Life Coalition urges Kathleen Wynne to deny cabinet post to Laurel Broten

Toronto, Feb. 8, 2013 – Campaign Life Coalition is calling on the Liberal government, under the new leadership of Premier-designate Kathleen Wynne, to heed the demands of approximately 10,000 Ontarians who signed a petition calling on the government to remove Laurel Broten from her post as Education Minister. The petition was circulated following Broten’s brazen attack on religious freedom back in October. At that time she claimed that Catholic schools can no longer teach that abortion is wrong. She alleged such teaching is a form of ‘misogyny’ and thereby prohibited under The Accepting Schools Act.

"It is in the Premier-designate’s best interest to listen to these people and make sure that Broten does not stay on as Education Minister come Monday when she appoints her new cabinet," said Jim Hughes, President of Campaign Life Coalition. "Wynne should also re-affirm that this government under her leadership will be committed to protecting religious freedom by allowing the instruction of Catholic moral teaching on abortion in Catholic schools."

"With a potential provincial election looming, Campaign Life Coalition calls upon all party leaders to listen to these Ontarians who are very concerned that inaction in this matter is a threat to their most fundamental freedom," said Mary Ellen Douglas, Ontario President of Campaign Life Coalition. "To this end we will present the signed petitions on Monday, February 11, 2013 to the office of the Premier and to the constituency offices of the leader of the Opposition Tim Hudak and NDP leader Andrea Horwath demanding the removal of Laurel Broten from Cabinet and the repeal of The Accepting Schools Act (Bill 13)."
