Albertans to say NO to funding abortions with their tax-dollars
Edmonton, October 2, 2013 - On Thursday October 3, 2013, Alberta taxpayers will gather at the Alberta Legislature in Edmonton to demand that MLAs remove elective abortion from the list of services covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan. The Alberta government funnels at least 13 million taxpayer dollars towards this medically unnecessary procedure. At the same time, it forces patients who suffer with genuine medical conditions to languish on waiting lists, due to lack of funding. Many genuine health care services are denied AHCIP coverage altogether including physiotherapy, optometry exams and ambulance services.
The rally is part of an unprecedented, multi-province Defund Abortion campaign that also includes rallies in Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Ontario on the same day, followed by Quebec, Saskatchewan and British Columbia next spring. "The government should stop forcing taxpayers to subsidize this controversial procedure with their hard-earned dollars," said Sharon-Rose Milan, Executive Director of Campaign Life Coalition Alberta. "For that money we could hire 57 family doctors, or 200 nurses in communities facing a critical shortage, or we could provide crucial therapy to 167 autistic children each year. Healthcare should save lives, not end them."
Campaign Life Coalition Alberta plans to go door to door leafleting throughout the province in the upcoming months and has launched a petition to MLAs.
