Wynne government prioritizes abortion over vision and cancer care

Toronto, Oct. 31, 2013 – Campaign Life Coalition is appalled by the Ontario government’s decision to cut funding for cataract surgery which was recently highlighted by London West NDP MPP Peggy Sattler at Queen’s Park. On the heels of our campaign that saw rallies at the constituency offices of a majority of Ontario MPPs calling for the defunding of abortion, the debate in the Ontario Legislature reaffirms our position that the Ontario government is grossly mismanaging tax-dollars in the healthcare system.

“Here we are  funding medically unnecessary abortions to the tune of $30-$50 million annually, while the legitimate healthcare needs of seniors such as cataract surgery are being cut, life-prolonging treatment for cancer patients are rejected and rural hospital budgets frozen so they can’t meet the demands of the population they serve” said Jim Hughes, President of Campaign Life Coalition. “Taxpayer-dollars should be spent on life-saving healthcare, not life-ending procedures.”

An Abacus data poll from 2011 found that more than 60% of Ontarians oppose forcing taxpayers to pay for all abortions. The $30-$50 million figure, excludes the cost of abortion complications, such as perforations, uterine hemorrhage, pelvic inflammatory disease, sepsis, post-traumatic stress disorder, infertility and breast cancer.

“Seniors have been investing taxes into the system their entire lives. Now when they expect delivery of the goods they bought, the government says ‘sorry, but the loss of your sight isn’t important enough to us to pay for your needed treatments’,” said Mary Ellen Douglas, Ontario President for Campaign Life Coalition. “This violates basic principles of fairness and social justice.”
