Campaign Life Coalition calls for defeat of assisted-suicide bills

Toronto, Mar 27, 2014 – Campaign Life Coalition strongly opposes the two assisted-suicide private members’ bills recently introduced by MP Steven Fletcher (Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia-Headingley). This was an issue that was overwhelmingly rejected by parliament in 2010.

“MP Fletcher says he wants safeguards to protect vulnerable people from being killed against their will, but as numerous studies from the Netherlands and Belgium illustrate, there is no way to provide adequate protection from abuse of legal euthanasia or assisted-suicide,” said Mary Ellen Douglas, National Organizer for Campaign Life Coalition. “We remind the public that the House of Commons debated this issue in 2010 via Bill C-384 which was soundly defeated on second reading 228 to 59 votes.”

Campaign Life Coalition maintains that what terminally ill, seriously disabled, and other vulnerable Canadians need is excellent quality palliative care, and the focus on any end-of-life debate should be on that issue.

Campaign Life Coalition calls on all MPs to vote against Fletcher’s bill if and when the bill comes to a vote in the House of Commons.
