Alleged pedophile’s involvement and new focus on “consent” don’t inspire confidence
Toronto, December 12, 2014 – In response to the Wynne Government’s approach to Sex-Ed and parental consultation, a press conference was organized today by Citizens For Good Education, a network of parents, multicultural, ethnic minority and faith-based groups, blasting the Sex-Ed consultation process. Greater parental involvement was demanded, while a partner organization, Campaign Life Coalition, spoke out against the Sex-Ed program’s unsavory connection to a man charged with 7 counts of child pornography including making and distributing child porn, and to other groups with radical agendas.
“In 2010, when parents first learned of this Gr. 1 to 7 curriculum, Sex-Ed lessons that were too graphic at too young an age made them feel uncomfortable,” said Jack Fonseca, Campaign Life Coalition spokesperson. “Now that we know it was written under the direction of an alleged child pornographer, former Deputy Education Minister Benjamin Levin, parents are even less comfortable. Levin’s hand in an explicit program that seems to sexualize kids has only heightened concerns, including my own, as the father of a kindergartner”.
Fonseca also highlighted concerns about the government’s new focus on consent: “The Education Minister fueled the fire with her revelation that lessons may ‘explicitly’ discuss consent for sex. The main lobbyist for the 2010 program raised even more eye brows, asserting that discussions about consent should underlie every stage of sex education.”
The background information in respect of this curriculum, and the lack of transparency over its contents, should make every parent in Ontario concerned over the radical nature of this initiative.
Campaign Life Coalition joined the CGE partners in demanding the immediate release of the proposed Health & Physical Education curriculum and greater parental involvement in shaping it.
