Health Canada approves human pesticide RU-486
Toronto, July 30, 2015 - The deadly abortion pill RU-486 (mifepristone) has now been approved by Health Canada officials. Campaign Life Coalition and other pro-life groups launched petitions against approval of the abortion drug arguing Canada does not need to make abortion access easier and citing its health risks to the mother. Clinical trials in Canada were halted in 2001 following the death of one woman. In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported 2,200 adverse effects, including 14 deaths, 58 ectopic pregnancies, 256 infections and 339 problems resulting in blood transfusions.
Pro-lifers were hopeful that Bill C-17, which became law last November 2014, might help keep RU-486 out of Canada. Also known as Vanessa’s law, the private member’s bill requires the mandatory reporting of adverse drug reactions and institutes tough new penalties for unsafe products.
“RU-486 is a human pesticide which kills the pre-born child and harms women,” said Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition. “We have fought against this drug coming into Canada since 1999 in order to safeguard the health of women and save unborn children from early deaths.”
“We have a glut of abortions in Canada since 1969 with deaths of in-womb babies exceeding 4 million,” said Mary Ellen Douglas, National Organizer of Campaign Life Coalition. “Surely we do not need to add this disastrous medication to the killing that is already taking place.”
Campaign Life Coalition calls on the federal government, Health Minister Rona Ambrose and Prime Minister Harper to stop the distribution of this drug. Canada must begin to protect children in the womb and offer their mothers true help not a dead baby.
