Pro-lifers applaud Scheer, plan to hold him to campaign promises

Toronto, May 27, 2017 – Campaign Life Coalition congratulates Andrew Scheer on becoming Leader of the Conservative Party. The results of the race demonstrate the strength of the social conservative movement and importance of pro-life and pro-family voters. The principled, bold social conservative candidates Brad Trost and Pierre Lemieux finished in fourth and seventh respectively, and Andrew Scheer, who has a pro-life voting record, won. CLC sold more than 11,000 memberships to supporters in every province and territory, covering 303 ridings, and ran a strong get-out-the-vote campaign.

Andrew Scheer says he will focus on the best policies of the party and what unites the Conservatives. The best policies of the CPC include its opposition to gendercide abortions and protection for preborn victims of crime. We look forward to working with Scheer in fighting for these policies which have already been endorsed by a majority of delegates at last year’s CPC policy convention.

Also, with Scheer as the leader of the official opposition, CLC will work to ensure that his campaign promises are fulfilled. Promises include

•        Ceasing federal funding to universities that do not respect freedom of speech

•        Allowing private members bills dealing with abortion and other moral issues

•        Enshrining conscience rights protections for health care workers who oppose euthanasia

•        Supporting the rights of parents as first educators of their children.

•        Making maternity benefits tax-free.

“In addition to congratulating Scheer on his victory, we congratulate and thank Brad Trost and Pierre Lemieux who were unapologetic in their pro-life convictions, and made pro-life issues part of their leadership platforms,” said Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition. “Scheer was propelled to victory by the redistribution of the Trost votes.

“Social conservatives make up a significant block within the party and their views and concerns should be respected,” said Jeff Gunnarson, Vice-President of Campaign Life Coalition. “The party must acknowledge that pro-life and pro-family voters are part of the Conservative Party’s winning coalition, by promoting policies that speak to the values of many Canadians.

CLC thanks its supporters for getting involved in the democratic process and looks forward to working with a new party leadership that will work with pro-life Canadians.
