The Year 2000 World March of Women
110 Rue Sainte Therese #307
Montreal, Qc HAY 1E6
Dec 29, 1999
Many of us have been following the preparations for the World
March of Women for 2000. From the WUCWO latest edition , the above
address was given to contact, for those interested in signing
up . Some months earlier I tried to connect to a website on this
March but it was not available at the time. Is there a Website
now?
From the article in WUCWO's Dec/99 Newsletter, a meeting was held
in March 1998 in Montreal ,when 140 women from 65 countries adopted
a Platform of demands dealing with recommendations against poverty
and violence. Apparently these recommendations are consistent
with the Platform for Action of Beijing and the around the four
World Conferences on Women convoked by the United Nations. They
do not represent all women.
As the article stated clearly , The Year 2000 World March of Women
is, in practical terms , an " international " meeting self -summoned
by women's movements . Moreover , this World March of Women is
a good example of well-organized action , starting from the grassroots
upward to reach the whole world, while respecting the diverging
components of the movement ".
It is certainly essential that the pro-life component is well
represented in the March. If women are to " jump into the new
millenium" ; and " we will reset the world's clocks to a time
of sharing, peace and equality and announce that women , more
than ever, will be the protagonists of major change" , THEN the
world HAS TO HAVE that peace and equality BEGIN with women against
the violence of abortion . How else can any "major change" come
about , or " world-wide political pressure " against violence
and poverty be taken seriously ? Such organizations as the CWL
and WUCWO will be very supportive of the pro-life contingents
to the World March . Pro-Lifers look forward to participating
in this event in our own city of Vancouver ! Please pass on the
word to your organizations , and we will keep in touch for preparations.
Yours truly,

Subject: Re: Re Pro-Life Contingent to World March March
2000
We acknowledge reception of your e-mail dated December 29 concerning
the presence of a «pro-life» contingent at the World March of
Women.
After having verified the kind of organization you represent and
following a discussion at the last meeting of the Coordinating
Committee of the World March of Women held on January 28th it
was unanimously decided that the demand to have a «pro-life» contingent
at the World March is unacceptable to us since the anti choice
position defended by your organization is in clear contradiction
with the objectives pursued by the March and specifically with
one of our world demands, namely:
| That
States recognize, in their statutes and actions, that all
forms of violence against women are violations of fundamental
human rights and cannot be justified by any custom, religion,
cultural practice or political power. Therefore, all States
must recognize a woman's right to determine her own destiny,
and to exercise control over her body and reproductive function. |
We are hoping you will respect the decision of
the Coordinating Committee. We believe that the most respectful
way to avoid pointless discussions and confrontations is for you
not to pursue your idea to organize a «pro-life» contingent.
Yours truly,
Diane Matte
Coordinator for the Coordinating Committee
