WORLD MARCH OF WOMEN 2000

LONDON BISHOP JOHN SHERLOCK'S
SEPTEMBER 22 STATEMENT

RE: MARCH OF WOMEN

My support for the March of Women is a gesture of solidarity and support for women throughout the world who are victims of war, domestic violence, and social and economic discrimination. The refugee camps of the entire world reveal the extent to which women and children are victims of violence and poverty.

Unfortunately, some careless remarks of mine about the limited focus of some Pro-Life efforts, remarks for which I have sincerely apologized, have been taken out of context by some Pro-Abortion advocates to suggest that I support a pro-abortion agenda for the March of Women.

That is completely false. At least 50,000 of the children aborted each year in Canada are girls. Mounting evidence suggests that their mothers risk long-term physical, emotional, pshychological, and spiritual trauma.

My stance is in favour of life from conception to natural death. It is the only stance that can be reconciled with the equal dignity of all women and the creative love of God on which the dignity is founded.

In Christ,
Most Rev. J. M. Sherlock, D.D.
Bishop of London
