Candidates
(Campaign
Life Catholic is a New Arm of Campaign Life Coalition)
The
Campaign Life Catholic Municipal Elections 2003 Voter's Guide
lists Catholic School Trustee candidates
who are considered "supportable" based on their answers
to the CLC survey. The survey and resulting guide are intended
to support democratic accountability and support for Catholic tradition
on behalf of an elected office that has a disturbingly high acclamation
rate.
In
a democracy, acclamation rates of 70% or higher do not serve the
community being represented. Moreover,
for the electorate to not know where their candidates stand on key
educational and political issues of the day demonstrates a lacklustre
attitude towards these offices that are critical to the Catholic
education system in Ontario.
Pro-life
Standard for Catholic School Trustees
Only candidates who are 100% pro-life
are considered supportable for this particular office. In Federal
and Provincial elections, Campaign Life Coalition has endorsed candidates
who are pro-life with exceptions for things like rape and incest.
However, these exceptions are not legitimate for holders of Catholic
offices because of what the Catholic Church has constantly taught
about the gravity of supporting abortion.
Vatican
II calls abortion "an
unspeakable crime" against humanity (Gaudium et spes, 51). In
the 1982 Code of Canon Law, participation in an abortion is an excommunicable
offence (Can. 1398). Finally, the Catechism of the Catholic Church
states: "Human life must be respected and protected absolutely
from the moment of conception (2270)".
As
well, human reason indicates that one cannot be pro-life and at
the same time believe that children
conceived by rape, incest or other traumatic circumstances are any
less valuable than others. Consequently, any candidate for Catholic
School Trustee who is not 100% pro-life has not been listed.
All of the following candidates are considered supportable by CLC
