The two towers: McGuinty & Obama's war against the Catholic Church

The Two Towers, J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic Lord of the Rings novel, depicted a dire struggle for mankind in which both superpowers, Mordor to the south and Isengard to the north, combined forces to wage war against the free peoples and subjugate them to their despotic will.

It is well-known that Tolkien drew upon his devout Catholic faith to weave Christian themes throughout his works about the mythical land called Middle Earth. If Tolkien were alive today, I wonder if he would see in the extraordinary events taking place now on both sides of the US-Canada border, an analogous situation to the battle for Middle Earth.

In the USA, President Obama has declared war against the Catholic Church in particular, and religious freedom in general, with his mandate that Catholic institutions must provide contraception and abortifacient drugs to employees, under their health insurance plans. These things are, of course, antithetical to Catholic teaching, and a transparent violation of the Church’s first amendment rights.

The U.S. Catholic bishops have acknowledged that Obama’s mandate is a declaration of war against the Church.  So much has this mandate threatened people of faith that Mormons, Evangelicals and Baptists (who do not share Catholic doctrine on contraception) have united in solidarity under the banner, “We are all Catholics now”.  This slogan acknowledges that if religious freedom is under assault for Catholics, it’s under assault for everyone.

North of the border in Isengard – oops, sorry -- I mean in Ontario, Premier Dalton McGuinty launched a similar war against the Catholic Church. He is attempting to trample its constitutionally-guaranteed right to Freedom of Religion.  In Bill 13, proposed legislation that purports to reduce bullying, McGuinty, like Obama, is mandating that the Church accept something which it believes is contrary to Catholic doctrine. McGuinty is demanding gay-straight alliance clubs (GSAs) or similar groups by another name.  The problem is that the Church has assessed such openly homosexual, gay-activist clubs as being incompatible with its mission and Christian identity.  Despite objections by Catholic bishops, Premier McGuinty appears determined to impose his authoritarian will… whether they like it or not.

As occurred in America, Protestant, Evangelical and Jewish people of faith here in Ontario have recognized that this subversion of Catholic rights threatens all people of faith.  The U.S. debate has acknowledged that whether you agree or disagree with contraception, there’s a bigger principle at stake in this fight: Liberty. Likewise, the thousands of Ontarians who’ve spoken out against McGuinty’s Bill 13, from a diversity of faith traditions, are saying that regardless what one thinks about GSAs, there is something bigger at stake here:  Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Conscience.

In Tolkien’s novel, the free people of Middle Earth prevailed against the powers behind the Two Towers, thus safeguarding their liberty.  Who will prevail in the wars being waged today in Ontario and America, against the Catholic Church... and all people of faith?

It's easy for novelists to write about these struggles between good and evil. It's quite a jump for Christians to consider a novel (the work of someone's imagination) to be a prophecy, especially when it was never intended as such by the author. Can we ask Tolkien why he wrote it? Was it a vision he had - I mean it's really amazing fiction. A good novelist can write good fiction based on the history of mankind (good versus evil). Solomon said "there is nothing new under the sun". Tolkien's novels just proves that. The situations in Tolkien are common to almost every country in the world that has taken wrong steps in their history or been subjected to invasion by zealous invaders. So, is Tolkien prophetic, or is he just writing imaginatively based on history? I would caution Christians not to use Tolkien as the measuring stick for the actions of world leaders, but look to the Bible for direction and identification of false leaders and teachers, and continue to use the Word of God to point out where people may be wrong. Identifying people with characters in a novel is just too easy, and since Tolkien has no authority (he is not God, or a recognized and respected prophet) we should be very careful.

Thanks for the comment STF. The blog post doesn't attempt to suggest Tolkien's book was prophetic though. Just that one can draw a literary analogy between that work of fiction, and this menanacing political situation which, no pun intended, is almost stranger than fiction.

Your point is taken..
all people of various Religions should unite to protect our "Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Conscience". And no PM or Premier or any other politician has any any any right to morally direct our children. They are so off base and we the People need to remind them. Get out of that business and do what you should - govern a Province, leave the children alone!!

All these would-be/wanna-be dictators like McGuinty and Obama need to be reminded that the children they are trying to seduce are NOT their children. They can harm their OWN Children, BUT hands off where they have no business interfering to push their own evil - and it is evil - agendas.

When are the Bishops going to smarten-up and expose these so-called Catholic politicians who are hypocrits to say the least? They seem to publicize their affiliation with the Catholic Church only during election time. After they are elected they deny fundamental Catholic doctrine by embracing many anti-catholic values and even force such values on us. When are we going to stop electing such spineless frauds as leaders?

Ray, it's LONG overdue that our bishops excommunicate PUBLICLY any and all dissenters - especially - the deceitful "catholic" politicians so that they can no longer POSE as Catholics in good standing and faithful to the teaching Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

Everyone in this Province/country should know realize there is a nation-wide effort to take over not only our children and their minds and souls but also all of our Religious Rights.... This is not about an anti bullying bill.. this is all about totalatarianism.. and people must unite and take back their rights and stop governments from imposing their moral codes on our children and families! They have crossed the line!!!!

Religion had its chance to rule the world. Its was called the DARK ages.

Hi Phil. With all due respect, although religious people did some bad things, and even the church had its share of bad behaviour in the past, much of the DARK AGES myth is simply revisionist history. The so-called "Englightenment" period of atheism and anti-religious philosophy was birthed by mass murder. In the what many socialist professors and media types call the dawning of the "englightenment", the French Revolution, it actually involved the murder of thousands of Catholic priests. Leave it to the atheist history writers to call mass murder "enlightenment". The real DARK AGES of human history were the atheistic regimes that swept the globe in 20th century including Stalin's atheistic communist dictatorship which murdered tens of millions, Hitler's anti judeo-Christian movement that killed at least 9 million innocents, Mao's atheistic communist China, Pol Pot's, and so many other atheistic dictators. The deaths that are often blamed on the Catholic church over the inquisitions amount to fewer than 2000 people, over 350 years. And even that can't be totally attributed to the church. Therefore, the death commonly attributed to religion don't even come close to holding a candle to the mass murder of atheistic regimes. You should look more closely at history. If you want to see the body count of these atheist/anti-Christian dictators, have a look at this page: http://www.campaignlifecoalition.com/index.php?p=Dark_History
