No Free Speech Zone in Calgary

To: Mayor Naheed Nenshi and All Calgary City Councillors:

You recently announced plans to implement anti-free speech bubble zones in numerous locations across Calgary, restricting the rights and freedoms of over a million citizens. Large, city block-sized “buffer zones” will be established around every single school in the city. This comes after a group of pro-life activists stood peacefully outside a Calgary high school last year in order to raise awareness of the atrocity of abortion.

Abortion is the single greatest human rights abuse in our nation’s history, and it is only right that the people of Calgary – including students – are able to learn about this travesty. Canada permits abortion for any reason (or no reason) through all nine months of pregnancy. Abortion violently and brutally destroys the lives of around 100,000 children a year in Canada.

Your proposed censorship bylaw will create enormous speech-limited areas that engulf all public sidewalks, roads, and parks within 150 metres of the grounds of every public, private, and home school. Within these zones, your bylaw will outlaw all pro-life signs that are larger than 3.5 by 5 inches (i.e. the size of a postcard).

Citizens and students who want to share the truth of abortion within a bubble zone will face a crippling $1,000 fine. This is disturbing not only for the chilling effect it will have on public discourse, but also because it perpetuates a systemic human rights abuse by concealing the brutal reality of legalized abortion.

This is a draconian proposal that not only bans pro-life messaging, but all “advocacy messaging” of any type – any written or graphic communication that “publicly expresses an opinion on an issue or cause.” This will impact every citizen’s ability to share his or her opinion on any issue using any type of average-sized literature.

At a time when many violent and destructive protest groups are given a pass – groups like Antifa and various anti-oil activists, it is perplexing that peaceful pro-life protesters should be centred out for punishment. It is also strange that harmful commercial advertising will continue to be permitted around schools – advertising that promotes marijuana shops, alcohol and vaping products, and sex-toy stores. This is a double standard that has no place in a law-abiding, democratic society!

I believe you are overstepping your authority by bringing forward this totalitarian bylaw. You have no legal or moral right to silence Calgarians with whom you happen to disagree! Please reject bubble zones in Calgary.

Sincerely,

Public places and, importantly, schools, should be areas where opinions are expressed and views exchanged, or else prejudices, biases, and social barriers divorce the people, as seen throughout our history. If one tries to limit pro-life free speech, it cannot be limited through an excuse for safety for it assures safety!
