Rating Comments: No response to CLC's 2016 Questionnaire. Did not respond to CLC's 2011 questionnaire. After the topic of defunding abortion exploded in the media following Brad Trost's remarks, Wall told reporters that he would not change the status quo of funding abortions in the province. In 2010, he replied to a pro-life constituent's letter stating, "personally, I share your viewpoint", but went on to incorrectly imply that he does not have the legal power to defund abortion because of Canada Health Act requirements. The latter statement is erroneous - provinces do have the power to defund elective abortion. Wall's government initially tried to protect conscience rights of Saskatchewan marriage commissioners not to perform homosexual 'marriages', but showing great cowardice, decided not challenge a subsequent, non-binding court ruling saying that marriage commissioners must 'marry' homosexuals, even if it violates their religious beliefs. On the positive, his government scrapped the kangaroo court known as the Human Rights Tribunal, and requiring 'human rights' complaints to be heard in real courts by real judges.

Here are quotes from Brad Wall on various life and family issues:

After initially trying to protect marriage commissioners, Wall caved in to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal's absured ruling that it would be "unconstitutional" for his government to permit marriage commissioners to be exempted from performing homosexual "marriages" against their religious beliefs:  "“We appreciate and respect the rule of law and the role of courts in our society, especially in regards to the Charter, and so we’ve made our decision" [LifeSiteNews.com, 'Saskatchewan gvmt: Marriage commissioners must perform gay ‘marriages’', Jan. 19, 2011]

Wall appears to labour under the false impression that the Canada Health Act requires provinces to fund elective abortions, something that is not accurate:  "Abortion services performed in hospitals fall under the Canada Health Act, and are primarily a federal issue. The provincial government would not be expecting to deal with this issue. Our government supports the Canada Health Act and will function within it's provisions." [Letter to a constituent, dated Feb. 9, 2010. From website of the Saskatchewan Pro-life Association]

When questioned by reporters about defunding abortion, he took the approach of Stephen Harper of saying he would not change the status quo:  “We have different personal views in our caucus on the issue but we have support in our caucus, and I can’t think of an instance where it’s not unanimous support, for the position of the government, our position of our party, which is that there would be no change to the funding formulas for abortions” [LifeSiteNews.com, 'Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall: ‘no change to the funding formulas for abortions’, April 26, 2011]

Here are the answers for the questionnaire as provided by Brad Wall on 2011.

Question Response
Do you acknowledge that human life begins at conception (fertilization)? no response
Are there any circumstances under which you believe a woman should have access to abortion? (note: a surgical or medical intervention, designed to prevent the death of the mother but but which results in the unintended and undesired death of the pre-born child, is not an abortion. e.g. in cases of tubal pregnancy or cervical cancer) no response
Will you support measures to stop funding abortions with taxpayers' money in Saskatchewan? No (he is misinformed about the Canada Health Act)
Do you agree women have the right to be thoroughly informed about the serious health consequences of abortion, the development of the child in the womb and the alternatives to abortion? no response
Will you support the rights of parents to withdraw their children from school classes which offend their moral principles or beliefs concerning abortion, contraception and homosexuality? no response
Euthanasia is the deliberate killing of a person by action or omission, with or without that person's consent, for what people mistakenly believe are compassionate reasons. Will you oppose euthanasia and support measures to promote 'palliative care', the purpose of which is to alleviate pain and enhance quality of life for terminally ill patients? no response
Will you support legislation to protect the right of health care workers who refuse to participate in procedures which are in violation of their religious or conscientious beliefs? no response
