CLC rating: Pro-abortion extremist
Rating Comments: During the 2014 campaign trail, Brian Gallant proved himself to be a bona fide radical on the subject of abortion. New Brunswick's Liberal Leader announced a string of anti-life, dictatorial policies which marked a dramatic change from that of all his successors.

Gallant has strongly suggested that if elected, a Liberal government would funnel public tax dollars towards abortions committed at private, for-profit, killing centres like the Morgentaler abortuary. Although private medicine is illegal in Canada, Gallant seems willing to make an exception for abortuaries.

The rookie Liberal leader also stated rather clearly that a Gallant government would repeal the existing law which requires two-doctors to sign off on an abortion as 'medically necessary' before it can qualify for taxpayer funding. This means he would force New Brunswickers to pay for abortion-on-demand, for any reason or no reason at all, throughout all 9 months of pregnancy. Taxpayers would then be on the hook to pay for abortion being used for reasons of convenience, as a 'back-up' birth control method. This would be a gross abuse of scarce public tax dollars, especially considering we don't have enough money in the health care system to hire family physcians to fix the province's doctor shortage.

Aping his federal counterpart, Justin Trudeau, Gallant told reporters that all Liberal MLAs must vote pro-abortion, even if it means violating their consciences and/or religious beliefs. This anti-democratic edict violates the spirit of the Charter which guarantees freedom of conscience, religion and speech.

Premier Gallant resigned his office in Novemer 2018 and vacated his seat as MLA in October 2019 to accept an advisory position at Ryerson University in Toronto.

Position on diverting taxpayer $$ towards paying for abortions at Morgentaler's private "clinic"
In 2014, the Liberal Party Leader in NB came out against the long-standing ban on public funding for private abortion facilities. For decades, all 3 major parties have agreed that the province shall not fund abortions at private abortion 'clinics'. Only abortions committed at hospitals are publicly funded. After an organized campaign to fund the Morgentaler abortuary, the Liberal Leader came out strongly in favour of fully-funded, abortion-on-demand.

Position on cancelling the provincial requirement that 2 doctors sign off on the abortion as 'medically necessary' before it gets funded by taxpayers.
This is the current, decades old policy of the New Brunswick government. It was agreed upon by all major parties until 2014 when the Liberal Leader suggested this modicum of restriction needs to be removed, in the name of 'a woman's right to choose'.

Here are quotes from Brian Gallant on various life and family issues:

In response to a question about whether he would repeal an existing law that requires 2 doctors to certify that an abortion is 'medically necessary' before it gets funded by taxpayers, Brian Gallant told reporters he will indeed repeal the two-doctor rule if he becomes Premier, essentially funnelling taxpayer dollars to to finance abortion as a back-up birth control method:  “I think it's a barrier, I'm convinced a review will confirm that and would confirm that, and then we'd have to repeal it” [CBC.ca, 'Brian Gallant's abortion stance offers opportunity and risk', Aug. 25, 2014]

Showing his contempt for democracy, free speech, and Charter protected conscience-rights, Gallant made it clear that Liberal MLAs would have to vote with the party in favour of abortion:  "(provincial Liberal candidates) can have their personal preference, their personal beliefs, but they would have to respect the position outlined by the party." [CBC.ca, 'Anti-abortion campaign goes too far, says Brian Gallant', Sep. 16, 2014]

When questioned again by reporters about repealing the rule requiring 2 doctors to sign off on abortion as 'medically necessary' before paying for it with taxpayer dollars, Gallant doubled-down, pledging to repeal the law:  ""We have committed, if we form government, that we'll ensure that we swiftly act to find all barriers and eliminate them to ensure we're respecting a woman's right to reproductive choice." [Toronto Sun, 'Conservatives fail to answer Liberal abortion challenge', Sep. 12, 2014]
