Rating Comments: In response to CLC's 2018 election questionnaire, she denied parents' inherent right of primacy in the education of children. By using the euphemistic expression "the child's rights…must come first" and by claiming that the State is in the best position to interpret and "defend the rights of the child" she sneakily transfers to the secular State the inherent parental right of setting and guiding the moral education of children on controversial issues like abortion, homosexuality and contraception. She does not seem to support a full-throated, advance notification right for parents regarding controversial lessons, and does not support parents being able to withdraw their children from classes dealing with abortion, homosexuality and contraception except in limited circumstances.

Question Response
Do you agree that parents, not the state, have the inherent right of primacy in education of children? I believe that parents have both a right and responsibility in their child's education. Ultimately, the child's rights--and the rights of all children--must come first in our education system. Part of the state's role is to defend the rights of the child and of all children, and those rights always take precedent.
Will you defend the inherent right of parents to be notified in advance regarding any lesson, speaker or presentation involving controversial issues such as abortion, contraception, homosexuality, and gender ideology? I believe parents should have the opportunity to be aware of what their children are learning in all curriculum areas. It is practical to provide notice of a unit beginning, speaker attending, or special presentation being made for the express purpose of discussing the issues mentioned. However, other discussions might involve these topics, as is the nature of an interwoven curriculum. It would not be reasonable to expect, for example, that parents will be notified if the class is reading a book that contains gay or lesbian characters and the discussion includes different kinds of families.
Do you agree that parents should have the right to withdraw their children from classroom lessons or presentations involving controversial issues such as abortion, contraception, homosexuality, and gender ideology? Only as indicated above and with an appropriate reason. For example, a student who has experienced sexual trauma may find it difficult to participate in a class discussing sexual activity.
