What is marriage?
Marriage is the indissoluble union of one man and one woman for the primary purpose of the procreation and education of children. Sexual powers of procreation are morally exercised only within a valid marriage. Children flourish best within the context of a stable home environment where mother and father provide for them, are present in their lives, teach them about the meaning of being male and female and about the complementarity between the two sexes, and ultimately, teach them about what it means to be human. Marriage, along with the nuclear family that results from it, is the foundational pillar of society.
God, not man, is the creator of marriage. No human authority has the power to make marriage into something different from what God has already made it to be: its purpose is the union of the spouses and the procreation and formation of children. The state, however, has a vested interest in upholding and protecting male-female marriage since the family that arises from this union is the building block of society. When marriage is undermined, such as through redefinition to include other arrangements outside of male-female partnerships, the family suffers. When the family suffers, society suffers. "As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live," stated Pope John Paul II in a 1986 homily delivered in Perth, Australia.
Marriage is about attaching mothers and fathers to their children and to one another. At its heart, the institution of marriage is concerned with providing stability to children and ensuring that their mothers and fathers are committed to the offspring from their union. Contrary to claims about adult "rights", the state's interest in marriage is solely about protecting children, i.e. the next generation of its citizenry. Otherwise, the state has no interest whatsoever to promote marriage nor to elevate it above other types of human relationships.
Marriage is the institution which best protects and nurtures that basic cell of society upon which civilization is built, i.e. the family. Therefore, anything which undermines the institution of marriage undermines the family itself and weakens civilization. It's in the family that children are socialized, taught the importance of following rules, and have moral values instilled in them to last a lifetime.
The family is the first school of love for children where they learn that love is selfless, sacrificial, and wills the good of the other. The family teaches how to love and what love truly is.

How is marriage defined in Canada?
On June 28, 2005, the Liberal Party of Canada passed Bill C-38 which abolished the traditional definition of marriage as being between one man and one woman. The bill defined civil marriage as “the lawful union of two persons to the exclusion of all others,” thus allowing a partnership of two people of the same sex to be called marriage.
Does same-sex ‘marriage’ affect society?
Same-sex “marriage” has dire consequences for any nation that adopts this false definition of marriage, especially when it comes to various rights of speech, religion, and parental rights, especially in education. Freedom of religion and freedom of speech have been squelched in Canada shortly following the legalization of homosexual "marriage" at provincial and federal levels as those who defended real marriage, that is, between a man and a woman, were accused of hate speech, “homophobia,” and bigotry.
Human Rights Tribunals have been eagerly accepting frivolous human rights complaints filed by militant homosexual activists seeking to silence opposition to their lifestyle. In violation of their Charter right to freedom of speech and religion, pastors who have defended real marriage in the public square have been threatened, fined, and even banned from speaking publicly about homosexuality. Christians have faced legal repercussions for simply stating their religious beliefs about traditional marriage along with the Bible’s teaching on homosexual acts. Others, including elected officials, have been forced into silence to avoid paying ruinous legal defence fees. Some have even been sanctioned for stating the biblical teaching on sexuality, even in Christian-based institutions, while others have been forced out of their positions.
