TO: Hon. Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario and Education Minister Paul Calandra

Cc: Ontario MPPs

I am asking you to follow Alberta’s lead and implement a province-wide ban on all pornographic and sexually explicit books which, shockingly, are available in public school libraries across Ontario.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s government recently announced plans to introduce new rules governing “age appropriate” reading materials for school libraries in the fall.

The news came on the heels of a meeting the province’s Minister of Education had with concerned parents who highlighted some of the disturbing pornographic content that was available to both elementary and high school students.

An investigation by Campaign Life Coalition found that these same books, including Gender Queer by author Maia Kobabe, which shows young people engaging in oral sex, using sex toys, and much more inappropriate content, are also on the shelf in Ontario’s public school libraries.

Via a public survey, Smith’s government asked Albertans if they supported its proposed ban on pornographic books in school libraries, and, in doing so, shared excerpts from a few of the explicit works in question. Some of the examples depicted sex between men and underage boys, oral sex, sex toys, and explicit sex acts.

Premier Ford and Minister Calandra: I personally challenge you to view an excerpt from Gender Queer, which is currently on the shelf in dozens if not hundreds of Ontario schools. WARNING: Although we’ve redacted the explicit oral sex act, it is nonetheless disturbing. Click here to see it for yourselves.

Do you agree that no child – whether in elementary or high school - should be exposed to this kind of filth?

Clearly, this is not education – this is abuse. These kinds of books are not about stimulating the intellect of young students – they are about indoctrination and corrupting young souls.

Therefore, I respectfully request that the Ontario government protect our children by following Alberta’s lead and banning these kinds of reading materials that depict sexually-explicit and pornographic acts, from the shelves of school libraries across the province.

Sincerely,

[The undersigned]

Age Appropriate books in our schools is an ongoing concern. Particularly the book Gender Queer. I am greatly apauled and saddened at the types of reading materials young children are being exposed to, and often without the consent of their parents. Gender Queer is at the top of that list & should not be in schools.
