Islanders rally to keep Prince Edward Island abortion-free
Charlottetown, Nov 12, 2015 – The people of Prince Edward Island will gather in front of the provincial legislature today to send a loud and clear message to keep the island abortion free.
“Abortion is a medically unnecessary procedure that physically, emotionally and psychologically harms women and kills innocent unborn children”, said Sarah MacDonald, Provincial Coordinator for Campaign Life Coalition Youth. “We deserve better, which means keeping the island a safe space and keeping abortion off the island”.
The recent release of the abortion pill, RU-486 has brought new pressure to introduce this drug to PEI. “History has clearly outlined the potential dangers of this medical abortion, which along with being lethal to the developing life, also has the potential to compromise the mother's health”, said Dr. Laura Lewis, Family Physician and board member of the Canadian Physicians for Life. “Pregnancy is not a medical crisis, nor a disease. As health care providers we need to shift our focus from the provision of potentially unsafe abortion methods to responding to the circumstances women are challenged with.”
On Thursday, Nov 12, the rally will begin at 12 noon and go until 2pm, featuring guest speakers Dr. Laura Lewis, Angelina Steenstra from the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, Alissa Golob from Campaign Life Coalition, Holly Pierlot from PEI Right to Life and Sarah MacDonald from Campaign Life Coalition Youth PEI. The rally will also feature an appearance by a Member of the Legislative Assembly who will accept petitions on our behalf and address the crowd.
