Thousands of Canadians to Publicly Witness to Life at 36th annual Life Chain

Hamilton – On Sunday, October 4, thousands of Christians across North America will gather for Life Chain, an annual hour of prayer and peaceful public witness for the preborn whose lives have been snuffed out by abortion.

Now in its 36th year in Canada, Life Chain has become one of the country’s largest coordinated pro-life demonstrations. The tradition began in Canada in 1991, when Campaign Life Coalition brought Life Chain north from the United States.

This year, Life Chain is expected to take place in approximately 375 communities across Canada. Participants gather at designated intersections to pray quietly and hold signs with messages such as “Abortion Kills Children,” “Abortion Hurts Women,” and “Jesus Forgives and Heals.”

“The Canadian pro-life movement silently but boldly confronts our pro-death culture with the pro-life message through Life Chain,” said Josie Luetke, a member of the Life Chain Canada committee. “The mainstream media may studiously ignore this message, but we’ve bypassed them, bringing the truth directly to our neighbours passing by.”

There are no speeches or graphic images. For one hour, participants simply stand peacefully, pray, and invite their neighbours to consider the deadly reality of abortion. Almost 5 million preborn children have been erased by abortion since legalization in 1969.

She added, “Our reach is unparalleled. On this one day, a considerable segment of our population will be forced to think about abortion and what it actually does.”

Last year, more than 15,000 Canadians participated in Life Chain in over 375 locations from coast to coast, including a number of new locations in Quebec. Also last year, a new website was launched, lifechain.ca, to provide a dedicated hub for the event.

Luetke said this event is particularly important at a time when it's assumed there's consensus on abortion.

“When our country is committed to shrouding this evil in euphemisms and pretending this issue is settled, our visible opposition is critical,” she said. “It is the duty of anyone who would call themselves ‘pro-life’ to bear witness to those convictions.”

Life Chain locations and times are posted on the Life Chain website.
