Candidate, Verna Murphy
Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray), AB
Electoral District: Ward 1 (Fort McMurray)
Bio
CLC rating: Pro-transgender ideology
Rating Comments: On January 14, 2020, Councillor Murphy voted to pass a reckless and draconain by-law that bans all forms of counseling that radical LGBT activists disingenuously define as "conversion therapy". The ban is likely to apply to all corporations, churches and non-profit associations within the Wood Buffalo Regional Municipality (including Fort McMurray). This totalitarian ban now makes it illegal for people who experience unwanted gender identity confusion or same-sex attraction from being able to procure either clinical psychotherapy or spirtual counseling to overcome their unwanted condition or to leave the transsexual/gay lifestyle.
Shamefully, Councillor Murphy actuallly imputed her support for this LGBT enforcement by-lay to her Catholic faith (see Quotes tab).
Verna was an elected Councillor for the City of Wood Buffalo, but decided to run for Mayor of Wood Buffalo in the Alberta 2021 municipal election.

Here are quotes from Verna Murphy on various life and family issues:
Absurdly imputing her support for sinful LGBT practices to the Catholic faith: “Sitting here as a heterosexual, Catholic woman, I found some of your comments very offensive. To somehow insinuate that being gay is not healthy, I find that offensive.” [MyMcMurray, 'Bylaw to ban conversion therapy passes Council', January 15, 2020]
Here are the answers for the questionnaire as provided by Verna Murphy on Sept. 24, 2025.

Organizations like Planned Parenthood (PP) routinely counsel women to have abortions, and increasingly, are involved in dispensing the chemical abortion pill. Given that abortion is a controversial practice that many taxpayers in your municipality find abhorrent, do you agree that PP and similar “sexual health agencies" should not receive taxpayer funds through the municipality? | survey not sent |
There has been a move in some municipal jurisdictions to pass bylaws which establish censorship zones, also called “bubble zones”, around abortion facilities. These unconstitutional censorship zones make it illegal to express peaceful pro-life speech, including silent prayer, on taxpayer-owned public sidewalks within the vicinity of abortion facilities and pharmacies which dispense abortion pills. If elected, would you vote to oppose such a censorship bylaw, if it were ever proposed? | survey not sent |
Do you acknowledge that human life begins at conception (fertilization)? | survey not sent |
Do you consider yourself pro-life or pro-choice? | survey not sent |
