This heavy-handed motion was introduced by the Carney Liberal government to quash the ongoing, heated debate in committee surrounding the Liberals' so-called Hate Speech Bill C-9, which would eliminate the exemption that protects Canadians from being prosecuted for "hate speech" if they quote certain religious texts. Bill C-9 would criminalize passages of the Bible that pro-abortion and pro-LGBT Liberals and their ideological comrades find offensive, exposing Christians to fines and imprisonment. Motion passed by a vote of 186 yeas to 144 nays on March 10, 2026.

Disingenuously dubbed the "Combatting Hate Act" by the Carney Liberals, C-9 actually promises to make Christians a target of hateful attacks, reputational damage and legal persecution. It eliminates the long-standing exemption that protects Canadians from being prosecuted for "hate speech" if they quote controversial passages of sacred scripture in good faith, or make statements on the basis of sincerely held religious beliefs. Bill C-9 would criminalize passages of the Bible that pro-abortion and pro-LGBT Liberals and their ideological comrades find offensive, exposing Christians to lawfare and imprisonment. Bill C-9 passed 3rd Reading in the House of Commons by a vote of 186 yeas to 137 nays on March 25, 2026.
