Want government money? Renounce your faith, says Trudeau

Toronto, Dec 18, 2017 –Campaign Life Coalition condemns the Liberal government’s new requirement that employers seeking access to funds from the Summer Jobs Program, which includes tax dollars from pro-life people as well as others, must swear loyalty to Justin Trudeau’s political position on abortion. Beginning December 19th, prospective applicants to the federal program which helps employers hire summer students will need to sign an “attestation” declaring that they support abortion as a human right, plus the controversial theory of gender identity. This is a problem for faith-based organizations, non-profits and small business owners whose core values include a traditional view of sexual morality and the sanctity of life.

“The Trudeau government is engaging in ideological coercion by demanding that employers who believe killing children before birth is wrong, attest that they support so-called ‘reproductive rights’,” said Jim Hughes, national president for Campaign Life Coalition. “For the government to deny federal funds to pro-life employers for their summer students, while encouraging grants for pro-abortion organizations, is directly discriminating against millions of Canadians.”

“Trudeau is using the Canada Summer Jobs Program to compel and coerce Canadians to renounce their deeply held religious or moral beliefs, in exchange for federal funding,” said Jack Fonseca, spokesperson for Campaign Life Coalition. “This reeks of a deep-seated, anti-religious bigotry. Increasingly, Justin Trudeau is transforming the Liberal Party into a hate group against Christians, whom he clearly wants to suppress. This program change must be stopped.”

CLC is pleased that a few Conservative politicians have already publicly opposed the discriminatory policy, including MP Brad Trost (Saskatoon-University), MP Bev Shipley (Lambton-Kent-Middlesex), and a spokesperson from Andrew Scheer’s office.

CLC hopes the voices of opposition will grow to bring unbearable pressure to bear on the government to repeal this discriminatory and coercive policy. It has also launched a petition.
