Petition calls upon Canadian government to follow Britain’s lead in banning child sex-change surgery

Toronto, May 4, 2020 – After Boris Johnson’s UK government announced its plan to make it illegal for children under the age of 18 to undergo sex-change surgery, which the UK Equalities Minister, Liz Truss, explained would “protect them from making those irreversible decisions”, a petition campaign has emerged asking the Canadian government to follow suit. The petition, created by Campaign Life Coalition, was launched April 30th and already has close to 4,000 signatures.

“The UK government is reacting to an emergence of lawsuits and anger by gender dysphoric persons, like Keira Bell, who were allowed to pursue their childish fantasies of sex-change while still an under-aged minor”, said Jeff Gunnarson, National President of Campaign Life Coalition. “They believe that adults should have protected them from making such irreversible body changes which they came to regret later in life. Who can blame them?”

“We know children lack the ability to understand the long-term consequences of momentous, life-altering actions and, by definition, cannot give consent. We don’t allow children to drink alcohol or smoke marijuana, so why would politicians let them do something irreversible like genital mutilation?

“It’s time for federal and provincial governments in Canada to introduce legislation to ban this harmful practice in which children amputate perfectly healthy body parts, render themselves permanently sterile, and are subjected to a host of other medical health risks”, added Jack Fonseca, Campaign Life Coalition’s Political Operations Director. “The most authoritative study in the world on the effects to mental health of sex-change surgery, a Swedish cohort study, found that post-operative transsexuals had a nearly 20 times higher risk for suicide.”

Campaign Life Coalition will deliver petition signatures to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and to each provincial and territorial Premier, calling on them to introduce legislation.
