Although Jim was removed from his Council seat in June 2020 as a result of a court finding that he had overspent during the previous municipal election, he was temporarily reinstated in August 2020 pending a Supreme Court of Canada decision on whether or not to hear the case. In September 2020, the Supreme Court dismissed Jim's appeal, causing him to be removed from Council for a third and final time. As a result, Jim decided to leave politics after a 32-year career.

Here is Jim Karygiannis's voting record relating to life and family issues:
Votes, Surveys and Policy Decision | Vote | Score |
---|---|---|
Illegal & discriminatory vote to prevent the appointment of a Catholic to Toronto's Public Health Board, on the basis of her religious beliefs This motion, spearheaded by Councillor Joe Mihevc, was designed to discriminate against a Catholic School trustee Ms. Angela Kennedy, on the basis of her Christian beliefs regarding abortion and human sexuality. Employment discrimination on the basis of religious beliefs is illegal under the Ontario Human Rights Code. Trustee Kennedy had been appointed by a special committee, but a cabal of socially-liberal councillors, led by Mihevc, circumvented the normal appointment process by calling a vote and fearmongering against Kennedy about her religious beliefs. Trustee Kennedy was immensely qualified for the position, with 45 years experience as a registered nurse, and having undergone a rigorous application process. Catholics make up 33 percent of Toronto's population and it is only fair that they are given a single solitary seat at the table. The cabal of councillors hid their thinly veiled anti-Catholic bigotry behind weak arguments that barely concealed their contempt for her Christian beliefs. Sadly the discriminatory vote passed 20 to 17. [March 31, 2015] |
