CLC rating: Pro-life, pro-family
Rating Comments: On October 15, 2020, BC Liberal MLA Laurie Throness resigned from the party over comments he made in opposition to the NDP's scheme to provide free, tax-payer-funded contraception throughout the province. Throness thoughtfully compared the NDP's contraception drug-pushing to a kind of soft eugenics, which would implicitly encourage the poor to contracept themselves out of existence. Throness immediately came under fire for making that comparision and offered his resignation, which Liberal Party Leader Andrew Wilkinson quickly accepted, sheepishly kowtowing to the NDP/progressivist bloc by disavowing Throness' reasonable comments. Throness ran in the October 24, 2020 provincial election as an Independent candidate and lost his MLA seat to an NDP challenger by a mere 1.25% of the vote amid an NDP provincial sweep that reduced the BC Liberal Party to just 29 seats in the Legislature.

Throness had been the Liberal Party's Official Opposition Critic for Children and Family Development and Child Care.

Although he has been a speaker at the BC March For Life, Throness' position on abortion is unknown, as he has not responded to CLC's election questionnaire. His father and brother were pastors at the Christian Alliance Church in Chilliwack.

In July 2016, on the eve of the passage of Transgender enforcement Bill 27, MLA Throness gave a lucid and sobering speech warning his government colleagues against the dangers of adding the anti-human phrase "gender identity and expression" to the BC Human Rights Code. In that speech, MLA Throness predicted many of the harmful outcomes of such a misguided bill, some of which have already taken a stranglehold on BC society over the last few years (see Quotes and Video tabs). Notable among these injustices is the case of the BC father who is being forced by the courts to watch his teenage daughter undergo cross-sex hormone poisoning to suppress her natural biology and "transition" her into a "man", while the helpless father himself is muzzled by a court-imposed gag order.

Votes, Surveys and Policy Decision Vote Score
Bill 27 - 3rd reading of an Act to amend the BC Human Rights Code to add the LGBT-invented phrase "gender identity or expression" as a prohibited ground of discrimination.
This totalitarian Bill, introduced by BC Liberal Justice Minister Suzanne Anton, legally invents a new breed of humans out of those suffering from Gender Identity Disorder. The new law threatens to punish people who refuse to recognize or affirm transsexual delusions and alter-egos, considering such refusal to be a violation of "human rights". Here are quotes from Laurie Throness on various life and family issues:

Warning his fellow MLA's about the growing domination of LGBT ideology in society and politics (2nd of 3 quotes).  "When some person or group becomes irresistible to the government - when the government can no longer say 'no' to them - I get uncomfortable with that because if government ever aligns itself with partial or private interests rather than the public (interest), someone else's interest is going to suffer." [Speech to the legislative assembly of BC by MLA Laurie Throness, July 25, 2016]

Warning his fellow MLA's about the growing domination of LGBT ideology in society and politics (3rd of 3 quotes).  "I have some questions. My first question is for the LGBT community (sic). Now that the movement has 'arrived' - now that its view dominates in our society - is it mature enough to tolerate difference? or will it brook no dissent? My question for my own government, which I'm proud to support, is this: Will parents be able to send their children or young and impressionable people to an institution that supports the acceptance of one's birth gender (sic), or will government take a monolithic approach that supports the concept of gender fluidity alone?" [Speech to the legislative assembly of BC by MLA Laurie Throness, July 25, 2016]

Warning his fellow MLA's about the growing domination of LGBT ideology in society and politics (1st of 3 quotes).  "In my opinion, this special recognition (Bill 27, adding 'gender identity and expression' to the BC Human Rights Code) reflects the strong and growing political influence of the LGBT community (sic) . . . When the White House is bathed in rainbow colours, it's not a symbol of weakness, but of strength. Look at Vancouver's or Toronto's Pride Parade; these are all displays of power." [Speech to the legislative assembly of BC by MLA Laurie Throness, July 25, 2016]

Question Response
Do you acknowledge that human life begins at conception (fertilization)? --
Are there any circumstances under which you believe a woman should have access to abortion? (note: a surgical or medical intervention, designed to prevent the death of the mother but but which results in the unintended and undesired death of the pre-born child, is not an abortion. e.g. in cases of tubal pregnancy or cervical cancer) --
Will you support measures to stop funding abortions with taxpayers' money in British Columbia? --
Do you agree women have the right to be thoroughly informed about the serious health consequences of abortion, the development of the child in the womb and the alternatives to abortion? --
Will you protect the rights of parents to educate their children according to their faith in matters of moral principles and beliefs concerning abortion, contraception and homosexuality? --
Will you support legislation to protect the right of health care workers who refuse to participate in procedures which are in violation of their religious or conscientious beliefs? --
Will you oppose euthanasia and instead support measures to promote “palliative care”, the purpose of which is to alleviate pain, and enhance the quality of life for terminally ill patients and those with disabilities? *Euthanasia is the direct and intentional killing of a person by action or omission, with or without that person’s consent, for what people mistakenly believe are compassionate reasons. --
