Legislative Proposals

Some examples of bills, policies and regulatory measures that pro-life legislators could propose:

Abortion
1. Pass a "person-hood amendment". This would recognize the person-hood of human beings from the moment of conception. This legal avenue is being favoured by pro-lifers in an increasing number of US state legislatures.
2. Pass an Informed Consent law requiring that abortion facilities inform women of all risks associated with abortion (breast cancer, post-traumatic stress disorder, infertility, etc)
3. Pass Anti-Coercion legislation require abortion clinics and abortion counseling centres like Planned Parenthood to visibly post signs informing women that nobody can coerce them to have an abortion and that she has the right to say no.
4. Pass legislation requiring a mother to be shown an ultrasound of her unborn child before scheduling an abortion. This helps ensure she is fully aware of the moral implications of her abortion-choice and will save many women from post-abortion trauma.
5. Pass a law requiring parental notification for children under 18 seeking abortion.
6. Restore parental consent laws for abortions on minor children.
7. Spousal notification law. To grant biological fathers the right to know that their children are scheduled for termination.
8. Eliminate public funding for abortions so that tax payers do not have to pay for other people to commit abortions.
9. Eliminate taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood and the Canadian Federation for Sexual Health, groups that promote abortion and in some cases, dispense abortifacient pills.
10. Require that government programs which give Planned Parenthood access to the community or a public stage, also be offered to pro-life pregnancy support groups or to abstinence-only counseling groups.
11. Require that that government subsidies to abortion-promoting groups like Planned Parenthood are also offered to pro-life pregnancy support groups or abstinence-only education groups.
12. Require hospitals to begin reporting the root cause of female deaths rather than just the surface symptom (eg. Died of a hemorrhage). Must use a standardized coding system that includes "Abortion complications" so that it is documented when a woman hemorrhages to death from a botched abortion or after taking abortifacient drugs like RU-486.
Embryonic Stem Cells
1. Pass a "person-hood amendment". This would recognize the person-hood of human beings from the moment of conception. This legal avenue is being favoured by pro-lifers in an increasing number of US states.
2. Ban public funding to research programs which create or kill embryonic humans.
3. Incentivize research labs via larger funding grants, to work only with ethical adult stem cells or umbilical cord stem cells. These types do not destroy embryonic human beings.
Restoring True Marriage
1. Pass a law to restore the true definition of marriage between one man and one woman, to the exclusion of all others.
2. Invoke the power granted to Parliament by section 33 of the Charter of Rights & Freedoms, to override court rulings. This section is called the Notwithstanding Clause and was included in the Charter in anticipation of the need to reign in rogue and activist judges who make bad decisions. This is certainly the case with the provincial courts who ruled to abolish true marriage.
