Online campaign to fight “conversion therapy” ban features ex-gay & ex-trans who oppose Bill C-6

Toronto, October 28, 2020 – In response to Bill C-6 (formerly Bill C-8), An Act to amend the Criminal Code (Conversion Therapy) which seeks to criminalize any treatment or service offered to people desiring to overcome their unwanted gender confusion or same-sex attraction, Campaign Life Coalition has launched stoptheban.ca. It is an online resource that highlights many concerns with the proposed legislation and features a series of video testimonials by people who reclaimed their biological identity, overcame unwanted same-sex attraction, or found happiness through chaste living, as a result of spiritual direction and/or clinical therapy.

“There's a lot of misinformation out there, and Canadians need to know the truth about this legislation which is an unprecedented assault on civil rights and religious freedom, which this new site provides,” said Jeff Gunnarson, President of Campaign Life Coalition. “If passed, Bill C-6 will jail parents up to 5 years for affirming gender-confused children in the sex they were born, pastors for providing spiritual guidance, and therapists for counselling clients who voluntarily ask for help with unwanted sexual feelings. This is not about protecting people from harm. This is about criminalizing the public expression of biblical teaching on homosexuality, through the back door. Trudeau’s Liberals can’t openly make Christian doctrine illegal, owing to constitutional protections that exist for religious freedom, so they hope to accomplish it this way.”

Stoptheban.ca will educate Canadians about the fact that Liberals are lying when they claim the bill won’t prevent adults from seeking this type of counselling. It will.” said Jack Fonseca, spokesperson for Campaign Life Coalition. “The bill makes it illegal for therapists to charge their standard professional fee for the counselling sessions, imposing up to two years in jail for receiving a “material benefit from conversion therapy”.

“This is a sneaky way for the Liberals to make it de-facto illegal for adults to receive this type of counselling. Trudeau’s counting on the fact that no therapist will offer a service if they’re unable to make a living from it. It’s a way to indirectly make the services illegal,” added Fonseca.

As the bill now moves to Committee, Campaign Life Coalition urges all Members of Parliament to join the nearly 14,000 Canadians who signed a petition against this legislation, in speaking out and voting against Bill C-6.
