Here are quotes from Chris Johnston on various life and family issues:

With regards to the "primacy" of parents in their childrens' education:  I believe parents are their children's first teachers and strongest advocates. I've spent the last four years building transparent communication with the families in our division, with our latest surveys showing 92% parent satisfaction with the teaching and learning in Grande Prairie Public. I am not particularly interested in debating abstract legal theories derived from natural law philosophy. I focus on what actually helps students to succeed, in collaboration with parents: expanding programs of choice in the division, open communication and reporting, honest and accountable decision-making, and measurable results that families can trust. [Written response to CLC's 2025 municipal elections questionnaire, Sept. 10, 2025]

With regards to parents having the right to withdraw their students from lessons:  Parents already have these rights under Alberta law, and the 2024 Education Amendment Act strengthened these protections significantly by moving from opt-out to opt-in requirements. As a trustee, my role is ensuring that we implement these policies professionally while maintaining educational programming that serves all students effectively. The challenge isn't whether parents have these rights, because they clearly do. Instead, it's about how we balance parental authority with our educational mandate from the government to prepare students for citizenship and future success. My experience has taught me that transparent, open communication and early engagement with parents prevents most concerns from arising in the first place. [Written response to CLC's 2025 municipal elections questionnaire, Sept. 10, 2025]
