Rating Comments: In 2024, Mayor Johnston cast the deciding vote against an excellent motion to defund the City's Marxist and wasteful DEI spending, a program whose main purpose is to serve as a Trojan horse for LGBT ideology and propaganda.
On March 2, 2020, as a Red Deer City Councillor, Johnston voted in City Council to pass a reckless and draconain Motion that bans all forms of counseling that radical LGBT activists disingenuously define as "conversion therapy". The ban is likely to apply to all corporations, churches and non-profit associations within Red Deer city limits. This totalitarian ban (divided into five clauses) now makes it illegal for persons who experience unwanted gender identity confusion or same-sex attraction from being able to procure either clinical psychotherapy or counseling to overcome their unwanted condition or to leave the transsexual/gay lifestyle. Councillor Johnston voted against only one of the clauses in this terrible Motion (about monitoring federal and provincial manouvers on this type of ban).

This excellent motion, put forward by Councillor Kraymer Barnstable, and seconded by Councillor Chad Krahn, directed the City of Red Deer's administrative staff to create a report on the substantial cost savings that would be realized in the City's 2025 budget by defunding the plethora of Marxist and wasteful DEI programs funded by the municipal government.
